Saanen Goat

The Saanen is one of the two goat breeds from Switzerland, the Toggenburg. The Saanen are usually kept for milk and meat production. They can weigh up to 170 kg (375 lb) when fully grown.

A squirrel monkey has fur on his tail but is not a monkey. He lives in South America and Africa and eats fruit.

Squirrelfish

This fish can change its coloring to hide from predators. It is usually brown, but it changes to black and white stripes to scare the predator away when it sees a predator.

Sri Lankan Elephant

This elephant is dark grey with two large tusks (very long teeth). It is found in Sri Lanka.

Stabyhoun

This type of dog has extra toes on its front legs.

Staffordshire Bull Terrier.

This dog has grey fur with a white spot on its chest, and it is thought to come from England. It lives in England, but many people believe they are the same breed as the American Staffordshire Terrier.

Stag Beetle.

This beetle has massive jaws, which it uses to fight other beetles. It is like a big, mean bug.

Standard Schnauzer.

This dog is actually from Germany. The name ‘schnauzer’ comes from the word “schnauze,” which means nose. This dog has eyebrows that look like a mustache and a beard (under their mouth) called a “feather.”

Star-nosed mole.

This is a very unusual animal. It is gray and has black rings around its nose. It begins digging very soon after birth and helps it survive by eating worms and slugs that live in the soil.

Stargazer Fish.

This fish can run at very high speeds by flapping its fins like wings! They are found along the coasts of Australia.

Steelhead Salmon.

Salmon are an anadromous fish, meaning they migrate from saltwater to freshwater to spawn. This salmon makes its way up the Pacific coastline and into streams and rivers, searching for freshwater breeding grounds.

Steller’s Sea Cow.

This animal, also named the Guiana Manatee, is a marine mammal of Sirenia. It is native to Northern and Pacific Russia, Japan, Korea, and Alaska. It can reach 12 feet and weighs up to 1,800 pounds.

Stick Insect.

This insect was named after a Swiss physician who first observed them in 1760. They have an elongated thorax and a short neck, and their upper legs are held together just below the head.

Stiletto Snake.

The stiletto snake is named after its fangs, triangular with a sharp point. Stiletto snakes prefer cool, moist places like caves and wet areas with high humidity. They are also nocturnal and like to curl up together.

Stingray.

The aquatic stingray uses its flat, disk-shaped body to bury itself in the sandy bottom of the shallow water it prefers. It is one of the few species capable of squirting a sharp barb from its base at predators and potential threats.

Stoat.

The stoat is the largest carnivorous mammal in Europe and Asia. They have a body length of about 30 cm, and males weigh about 5-15 kg, while females are 10-25 kg.

Striped Hyena.

The striped hyena is native to Africa and is a scavenger that preys primarily on many mammals that live in the savannahs. Its large size and prehensile lips enable it to grasp prey with its teeth alone.

Striped Rocket Frog.

This frog species is found in the rocky streams of the Andes where they make their home among the boulders and plants growing along the water. It has a brown body with distinctive stripes that run from its eyes to its hind legs.

Sturgeon.

This creature is one of the oldest large fish that inhabit the river systems of North America. It is one of the few types of fish that can survive in freshwater, making them an important food source for Native American tribes.

Sucker Fish.

This style of fish can be found in fresh and saltwater. They are also known as Catfish and have sharp spines along the outside edge of their pectoral fins. This fish uses these spines for defense when threatened or hungry by burying them into an object or predator.

The Sumatran tiger is one of four subspecies of tigers that live in Asia and is found in forests in Sumatra. It is listed as an endangered species by the IUCN and faces an extremely high risk of extinction in the wild.

Sunbeam Snake.

The sunbeam snake is a genus of venomous rear-fanged snakes of the family Leptotyphlopidae found in south Asia. They are pretty small, reaching a total length (body + tail) of no more than 30 cm.

Surgeonfish

A surgeonfish is a group of fish named such because they possess sharp cutting blades (scalpels) in their tails, which are used to cut open coral or other algae. Most species are marine, but some inhabit freshwater, and a few species are found in brackish water.

Swai Fish

The swai fish comes from the river Mekong and is often kept in outdoor fountains in Vietnam. Swai fish can grow up to 50 cm in length and weigh 10 kg.

Swan

Swans are large birds of the family Anatidae, including geese and ducks. The swan is a bird of the open water, although it is usually found near water. It is a non-migratory herbivore, meaning its diet consists entirely of plants.
